The power of partnership: Social Bite x Mitchells & Butlers

UK-wide restaurant and pub group Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) began supporting Social Bite in 2020. Over the years, together we have developed a transformational, multi-year fundraising partnership with a shared vision of ending homelessness.

M&B were one of our first and largest Jobs First employer partners and the strategic focus on supported employment includes funding support workers dedicated to recruiting for positions within their organisation over the next three years.

London-based Chris Kelly is one of those support workers. Here, he shares some insights on how his role within M&B benefits both Jobs First employees and the company.

Finding a new role

“I’ve been in the recruitment and employment sector for over 10 years now. I reached a point where I wanted to use my skills to give something back to a worthwhile cause. Social Bite is exactly that, so when the opportunity came up, I absolutely had to get involved.

“As a development and support worker, I support individuals with a background of homelessness into sustainable employment. One of the key differences between my role and that of my Social Bite colleagues is that I work exclusively with one employer partner, M&B.

“The support and investment that Mitchells & Butlers give the Jobs First programme is invaluable. What they offer to team members is huge for the people that we work with. It’s incredibly inspiring watching people join M&B and going from strength to strength, completing training and personal development and being able to genuinely change their lives with the help, empowerment and support of Social Bite and M&B.

Working closely alongside Mitchells & Butlers

“I work alongside our brilliant venues to understand the requirements of each role, the culture within the team, and the vibe of the venue and its clientele. Working exclusively with Mitchells &  Butlers has given me the chance to immerse myself in the culture in the organisation, ensuring Jobs First fits seamlessly into M&B’s existing business practices.

“From the start I gained excellent insight into the group’s induction process, experiencing first hand their training platform and joining informative webinars. I’ve been really supported by Carly and Becca, from the internal recruitment team, and Matt, a senior Retail Capability Training Partner within the business. This close support means I’ve had access to a wealth of knowledge and contacts from day one – just like I hope to offer the employees I support.

Adding value for the employer and the employee

“A large part of my role is being a presence on the ground to our supported candidates, but also to the General Managers (GMs) and staff in venues. I offer support and guidance where needed, stepping in to discuss issues or concerns before they become problems.

“I also believe I add value as a point of contact for the potential venues as I spend a lot of time reaching out to prospective managers. I answer questions, bust myths around homelessness and support colleagues to get involved by offering an opportunity to somebody in need.

“Witnessing the transformation in people’s lives through M&B opportunities is incredibly inspiring. It has been eye-opening to understand the challenges of homelessness, but even more impactful to see how employment and a safe home can restore self-esteem and purpose in a person’s life.”
