Mitchells & Butlers take on the 100 Mile Challenge to end homelessness

Thousands of employees from the restaurant and pub company raised more than £100,000 for Social Bite.

Going the extra mile

In an inspiring show of teamwork, creativity, and compassion, 3,847 employees from Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) embarked on a unique fundraising journey this September. As part of their ongoing partnership with us, M&B employees covered over 88,000 miles as part of the 100 Mile Challenge. They raised an impressive £113,000 to support the movement to end homelessness.

The 100 Mile Challenge encourages participants to walk, run, skate, cycle—or get creative—in completing 100 miles, all in the name of supporting Social Bite’s mission to end homelessness. And the M&B team certainly delivered, with employees across the country coming up with fun and unconventional ways to reach their mileage goals.

From treasure hunts and paddleboarding to fancy dress walks featuring Willy Wonka and the Oompa Loompas, every team found their own unique way to contribute. Some even went the extra mile, like Joe, a team coach at the Tudor Rose in Coulsdon, London, who completed a marathon every week throughout September, raising £1,400. Another team cycled all the way from Birmingham to London, visiting every Nicholson’s pub along the way.

Making a difference together

With challenges completed in just 30 days, M&B participation in the 100 Mile Challenge not only raised significant funds but also brought attention to the issue of homelessness.

Social Bite’s Director of Fundraising and Partnerships, Sara Rees, praised the efforts of Mitchells & Butlers, saying, “the M&B contribution to the 100 Mile Challenge is a true reflection of the movement to end homelessness. The impact of the money raised will be huge, changing lives across the UK. A huge thank you to everyone at M&B.”

M&B’s Chief Executive Officer, Phil Urban, also expressed pride in the partnership. “We’re delighted to partner with Social Bite. Homelessness affects too many people for too many reasons. Social Bite is breaking the cycle by providing places of safety, jobs, and fresh starts, and we’re honoured to be part of that.”

The 100 Mile Challenge is just one example of M&B’s commitment to supporting Social Bite. M&B also participates in Jobs First, with 20 people affected by homelessness placed into roles with M&B brands across London and Scotland. Other fundraising initiatives include a football tournament, a golf day, and our upcoming Festival of Kindness. Customers at M&Bs venues will be able to add donations to their bills to buy a Christmas dinner for someone in need.

A huge, huge thank you to all at M&B for their support, commitment and enthusiasm for fundraising and finding solutions to end homelessness.
