Rolf sets his sights on 3 hour Marathon for Social Bite

Every year at Social Bite we are blown away by the hard work and enthusiasm of fundraisers who take on difficult challenges in support of our cause. One such amazing fundraiser is Rolf.

Rolf is taking on the Edinburgh Marathon on May 28th, raising funds and awareness of our work at Social Bite. With this in mind, we caught up with Rolf as he enters the final few weeks of training to learn more about why he chose to support Social Bite:

“I chose to support Social Bite because I’ve admired the work that the Social Bite has done for years. I think it is fantastic that you help those struggling with homelessness to turn their lives around, including with employment.

I chose Social Bite because I felt that the current cost of living crisis would hit the most vulnerable in our society the hardest. A lot of us take having a roof over our heads and hot running water for granted but the truth is most of us are only ever a run of bad luck away from becoming homeless ourselves.

No one should ever find themselves without a safe warm place to sleep and if I can help anybody who is in need, through my running, then I want to give it my best shot”

This will be Rolf’s third marathon, and second time taking on the Edinburgh Marathon, as he aims to complete in under 3 hours. Training for an event like a marathon is always difficult, with challenging moments clocking up the training miles to prepare but Rolf shared how the knowledge that he was supporting Social Bite has been an immense help through the training process:

“Knowing you are running for a charity gives you an extra incentive during those tough training miles, those runs in really wet and windy conditions during winter or in the latter stages of the marathon itself, to dig deep and push.

Wearing the charity top, spectators and fellow runners at races or Parkruns engage with you in a positive way, which gives you that extra boost. Edinburgh was already going to be a special event for me, as I had earmarked it as the course I was choosing to try and achieve the milestone of a sub 3-hour marathon. My personal goal is to try and gain Good For Age entry into the 2024 London Marathon.

Knowing however that I’m running for something bigger than myself and helping others just makes the Edinburgh Marathon that much more special. Even if I ultimately fall short of my time goal, if the funds I raise can help even one person escape from being trapped in the cycle of homelessness, then I’ll consider the event a success.”

Our work is not possible without the incredible support of fundraisers and supporters like Rolf – Thank you Rolf, we are so grateful for your support. 💚
